From Undergrad to Ninja Den | My Path to a Career in Software Engineering

Daniel Yang | October 3, 2018

About a year before I graduated from metropolitan State University of Denver in 2014, I had the opportunity to work with the small, but remarkably diverse individuals at Actall Corporation. Since I was pursuing my bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, I was brought on as a software Engineer Intern. I was tasked to conduct product performance tests, improve tooling applications, and write documentation for existing software. The internship didn’t include mundane tasks ( I wasn’t asked to pick up coffee) and there were numerous opportunities to learn with a supportive team that highly values personal development.

I’ve been a part of other software development teams, but my experience at Actall is truly unique. The development process does not only involve software but requires attention to hardware and firmware- a real full-stack experience. This opens new perspectives and allows me to experience different engineering aspects that normally wouldn’t be possible at other companies. The smaller size of the team and company almost guarantees that my contributions make a worthwhile and visible impact, which I thrive on.

Daniel came to work at Actall after graduating from Metro State University, and is now a vital part of Actall’s engineering team, aptly known as the Ninja Den.
